The Eggbutt cheekpiece prevents pinching of the lips and gives a slightly more solid feel against the side of the face. It also prevents the bit being pulled through the mouth. The release is slower and also introduces some poll pressure.

A conventional Snaffle joint has a nutcracker action, which means it will bear pressure on the horse’s bars and the tongue. The Barrel joint limits the nutcracker action and spreads the usual pressure over a larger area. When the rein is used, this mouthpiece wraps across the tongue creating tongue pressure and taking pressure off the bars due to the lock up action. Please note appearances may be deceiving, this bit joint is stronger than the Elliptical as pressure is more concentrated on the tongue as this joint is smaller.

  • 1 The measured width of a horse’s mouth (from corner to corner with no wrinkles) rounded up to the nearest 5mm. These are typical values for the breed. MMS = Measured Mouth Size. Click here for more information on measuring your horse’s mouth
2 Factors to be added to the measured width of a horse’s mouth to ensure the bit width is calculated correctly. This varies depending on the mouthpiece and cheekpiece of the bit. Fixed cheek pieces do not require any additional width to be added to the measured width of the horse’s mouth. For Barrel or Lock Up mouthpieces only add 5 mm as these mechanisms limit the nutcracker action.
3 The width of the bit for an optimal fit, taking into account its components and the width of the horse’s mouth. If calculating a bit width based upon a previously purchased Bomber bit, please make sure all relevant adjustments for differences in cheek and mouthpieces have adhered too.
4 Measurements in inches are approximate.
